Zubuyer Kaolin is an amateur astronomer, astrophotographer, digital artist, film-maker and inventor based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

He captures the wonders of the universe using telescopes he designs and builds himself. His journey into astronomy began as a child, driven by a fascination with the stars, science fiction, and the dazzling images captured by the Hubble space telescope.

Though Zubuyer didn’t take the conventional academic path, his curiosity and drive led him to master a variety of skills, from 3D animation, programming, robotics to telescope design. Alongside his career in animation and film-making, he rekindled his love for astronomy in 2019, setting out to build his first imaging telescope. Since then, he has crafted stunning images of galaxies, nebulae, and planets. Many of which were taken from his rooftop in Dhaka.

Zubuyer’s work has reached millions worldwide, earning features from NASA, the European Space Agency, Sony, Adobe to name a few. He won first prize in DarkSky International’s Capture the Dark photography contest, with his work displayed at the Shanghai Astronomy Museum.

Through his work, Zubuyer hopes to share the awe of the universe with others and inspire curiosity about the night sky and push the boundary of what’s possible . Beyond capturing images, he’s passionate about promoting astronomy in Bangladesh and beyond and dreams of sparking interest in the next generation of stargazers and space enthusiasts.

Zubuyer is deeply passionate about protecting the night sky from the growing threats of light and air pollution. Living in Dhaka, he faces firsthand the challenges these pose to observing and photographing the cosmos. He advocates for responsible use of artificial lighting, emphasizing its importance not just for stargazing but also for preserving wildlife and our natural environment. For Zubuyer, safeguarding the night sky is about ensuring future generations can experience the wonder of the stars and never lose our ancient connection with our cosmos.
